CORTEX

St. Louis, Missouri |Biotechnology |Economic Development

Resource Overview

CORTEX is a 200-acre technology district located in the midtown area of the City of St. Louis. The district was founded in 2002 by Washington University, Saint Louis University, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, BJC HealthCare System and the Missouri Botanical Garden, who collectively conduct more than $600,000,000 of life science related research annually. Among the many resources located within the CORTEX district are the BioGenerator and the Center for Emerging Technologies. CORTEX seeks to establish St. Louis as a regional, national and international hub for technology research, development and commercialization.

Recognizing these institutional commitments to grow St. Louis’ bioscience and technology assets, Wexford Science & Technology, a nationally recognized developer in nine university research parks, has chosen become a private development partner in the CORTEX district.

CORTEX recently completed a master plan to guide development over the next two decades – a visionary mixed-use plan that will create a vibrant, 24/7, live-work-play knowledge based community. The first implementation phase of this plan will result in new streetscapes and a new linear public park, CORTEX Commons, that will serve as an amenity not only for CORTEX tenants, but for neighbors in our surrounding neighborhoods. A $30 million MODOT I-64 interchange, which will serve as a new gateway entrance into the heart of the district, is under construction as of January 2013. By the end of 2013, planned and completed investments in the CORTEX district will have created more than 1,000,000 square feet of facilities and 2,500 technology and service related jobs.

Through its university, public and private sector partners, CORTEX provides access to university life science resources, incubator services, venture capital and laboratory and office space. CORTEX supports both emerging and established bioscience companies seeking a St. Louis regional presence.
